This Dodge/Chrysler transmission pan works on these transmissions: 40RH, 42RH, 42RE, 44RE, A500. This pan can be used on the following vehicles:

  • 1994-2001 Dodge Ram 1500 with 3.9 V6
  • 1995-2003 Dodge Ram Van 1500 with 3.9 or 5.2
  • 1988-1994 Dodge Ram Van 150 with 3.9 or 5.2
  • 2000-2003 Dodge Dakota with 3.9 (4WD Dakotas will need to have cross member loosened to install pan)
  • 1987-1999 Dodge Dakota with 3.9 or 5.2 (Check exhaust routing and 4WD Dakotas will need to have cross member loosened to install pan)
  • 1998-2003 Dodge Durango with 3.9 or 5.2
  • 1999-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4.0 (may also have AW4 transmission)
  • 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4.0 or 5.2 (may also have AW4 transmission and may have clearance issues with stock exhaust)
  • 1987-2001 Jeep Cherokee with 4.0 (may also have AW4 transmission and may have clearance issues with stock exhaust)
  • 1993-2002 Jeep Wrangler with 4.0 (may have clearance issues with stock exhaust and the frame crossmember)

Note to Jeep owners: Jeep uses both Chrysler and Aisan Warner transmissions and routes the exhaust in a variety of ways. Take a close look at your existing transmission pan to verify that the shape of the pan perimeter and the bolt pattern are the same as the PML pan you intend to order. The AW pan is shaped like a long narrow rectangle. This Chrysler A500 pan has 14 bolts. Some Jeeps have the Chrysler 42RLE transmission which has 13 bolts.

This pan can also fit an A904 transmission (later called the 30RH). Dodge introduced this transmission in the 1960s and it is found in light duty applications.

Please check your vehicle to be sure you have room for a larger pan (reference pan dimensions). The exhaust system and frame cross members are the primary concerns.

Baffles and Temperature Sending Units (Optional Machining)

The pan has cast-in baffles to reduce sloshing, and a boss that can be drilled and tapped for a temperature sensor. The option to have PML drill and tap the boss for a sensor needs to be ordered over the phone, not on-line.

Installations

Many Dodge pickups, Durangos, Dakotas and Jeep Wranglers and Grand Cherokees have installed this PML pan. Our thanks to those who provided us with pictures and comments on their installations.

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee with PML Transmission Pan

George Goss installed this PML transmission pan on his 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L ZJ. He had no interference or clearance issues. This is the picture he emailed us and what George said in his email:

PML transmission pan on Jeep Grand Cherokee

"I have to say that the PML transmission pan is a beautifully engineered & manufactuired product and I find it great for my Jeep. Not just because I like the added fluid capacity & drain plug (and commensurate reduced transmission operating temperature with easier maintenence), but also importantly because of the stiffness it remains planar when installed and prevents fluid leaking that the flimsy stock pan has a problem with. I hope you will share my feedback with other potential PML customers since I am happy with this harware addition to my vehicle."

Installation of PML Transmission Pan on a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0

As part of a project to breath new life into this 1999 WJ, this PML transmission pan and front and rear PML differential covers were installed. The transmission pan was a simple bolt on replacement. For the rear cover, the sway bar needed a spacer to increase clearance. See PML Dana 35 cover part number 5062 and for the front PML Dana 25, 27, 30 differential cover part number 5058.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee and PML Bolts with Pan

Vince with a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee emailed us to let us know that the pan fit fine but a couple of the bolts we supply are too long for some of the holes. The go all the way through holes hit the tail housing before they compress the gasket enough to prevent leaks. He added a couple washers to get the bolts to pull the cover up.

A stock bolt is shown at right. PML's bolts are longer to accomodate the thick flange.
